AAP Releases Second Candidate List for Delhi Polls, Shifts Manish Sisodia to Jangpura Seat

Introduction: AAP Releases Second Candidate List for Delhi Polls

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has unveiled its second list of 20 candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. In a notable move, the party has shifted former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia from his Patparganj constituency to the Jangpura seat.

Key Changes and New Candidates

Among the new candidates is Avadh Ojha, a civil services coaching teacher and motivational speaker who joined AAP on December 2. Ojha will contest from Patparganj, taking over from Sisodia.

Manish Sisodia, who was arrested in February 2023 by the Central Bureau of Investigation on corruption charges related to the Delhi liquor policy case, was granted bail by the Supreme Court in August this year. Despite his legal troubles, Sisodia remains a significant figure in the party.

The Delhi Assembly elections are expected to take place in or before February, although the Election Commission has yet to announce the official schedule.

First and Second Candidate Lists

AAP’s first list of 11 candidates, released on November 21, included six turncoats—three from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and three from the Congress. The second list, released on Monday, features Assembly Deputy Speaker Rakhi Bidlan, who will contest from Madipur instead of Mangolpuri, where Rakesh Jatav Dharamrakshak has been fielded.

Other notable candidates include:

  • Dinesh Bhardwaj: Contesting from Narela
  • Surender Pal Singh Bittu: Former Congress MLA, contesting from Timarpur
  • Mukesh Goel: Contesting from Adarsh Nagar
  • Jitender Singh Shunty: Contesting from Shahdara
  • Parvesh Ratan: Contesting from Patel Nagar
  • Prem Kumar Chauhan: Contesting from Deoli
  • Anjana Parcha: Contesting from Trilokpuri
  • Jasbir Karala: Contesting from Mundka
  • Pradeep Mittal: Contesting from Rohini
  • Purandeep Singh Sawhney: Contesting from Chandni Chowk

Shunty and Ratan, who recently left the BJP to join AAP, are also part of this list.

Leadership Changes

In September, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal resigned as the Chief Minister of Delhi and was replaced by party leader Atishi. Kejriwal’s resignation came shortly after he was released on bail in the liquor policy case, with conditions preventing him from visiting the Chief Minister’s office or the Delhi secretariat.

Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in March, stated that he would return to his post only after receiving voter support. He had called for the Delhi polls to be held in November alongside those in Maharashtra.

Conclusion: AAP’s Strong Position

In the 2020 Assembly polls, AAP secured a dominant victory, winning 62 of the 70 seats, while the BJP won the remaining eight. As the party gears up for the upcoming elections, the new candidate list and strategic shifts indicate AAP’s readiness to maintain its stronghold in Delhi.
