Sam Altman vs. Elon Musk: The AI Showdown

In a fresh exchange of barbs between tech titans Sam Altman and Elon Musk, the OpenAI CEO took a jab at Musk’s new AI model, Grok, after it picked Kamala Harris over Donald Trump as the better presidential candidate.

The Controversial Question

The question posed to both AI models was straightforward: “Who would be the better overall president for the United States, Trump or Harris? Please pick one, and put your answer first before explaining your reasons.”

ChatGPT vs. Grok

Altman shared screenshots showcasing the responses from ChatGPT and Grok when asked to choose between Harris and Trump as the better leader for the United States. ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, gave a balanced comparison of the two political figures’ policies without picking a side. On the other hand, Grok, Elon Musk’s AI model, picked Kamala Harris as the better option, raising eyebrows, given Musk’s known support for Trump.

Altman’s Cheeky Comment

Without directly naming Musk, Altman shared the contrasting replies with a cheeky comment, asking: “Which one is supposed to be the left-wing propaganda machine again?”

Musk’s Response

Following the viral post, Altman doubled down with another tweet, praising ChatGPT’s impartiality. “We are proud of how consistently ChatGPT scores as the least biased AI in evaluations. That is an important default (and then users should have lots of choice to customise),” he said.

Musk, known for his outspoken criticism of ChatGPT’s perceived ‘wokeness’, couldn’t resist firing back. Although he didn’t directly respond to Altman, he took a swipe at him indirectly by posting, “Swindly Sam is at it again,” on X.

The Bigger Picture

Elon Musk has previously accused OpenAI’s model of being influenced by a “woke mind virus,” describing it as fundamentally anti-human and criticising its alleged bias against conservative viewpoints.
